Merck & Company

Day One Multi Country Satellite Conferences

When pharmaceutical giant Merck and Co planned their announcement of the merger with Schering Plough, they turned to PMTV to orchestrate a global satellite video conference.  The goal of the "DAY 1" event was to enable live real time interaction with as many employees from both companies as was technically feasible. PMTV came up with a production plan utilizing satellite, Internet, web conferencing and phone bridge solutions to deliver the meeting message worldwide. In the initial phase of development PMTV performed site surveys for the live satellite broadcast element of the event. After surveying the host origination site at Merck's Rahway NJ facility, additional surveys were undertaken in seven countries: Singapore, Japan, Brazil, Netherlands, Germany and Mexico.  PMTV extensive worldwide resources enabled our technical survey teams and vendors to meet face to face with the Merck group leaders in charge for each of the sites.

For the host location production PMTV provided multi-camera TV truck, camera jib system, lighting, staging, projection and set backgrounds, plus show power, multi-language translation and complete design and execution of the multi country satellite and web connectivity. PMTV also provided above the line Direction, freelance crews, scripting and prebuilt show opening and close features.  Other duties that fell to PMTV were arranging security, fire marshal approvals and local permitting for all locations worldwide.

Each remote location was tasked to provide a live interactive two way segment back to the Merck's USA facility and also host up to several thousand local employee viewers with satellite receive capabilities and Audio-Video support services.

The two hour live broadcast from 7 countries involved 127 crew members, 26 cameras, 38 telephone lines for communications, 400 Kilowatts of power at the host site, 138 total hours of transmission time, 17 satellite broadcast paths on 4 satellites, 11 redundant uplinks systems and four international fiber paths.   By utilizing 8 audio subcarriers, PMTV was able to provide each location with a unique mix minus insuring flawless audio quality.

The DAY 1 event was viewed by Merck executives as a tremendous success from both an employee interactive informational aspect and also of the technical execution by PMTV.
